I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Say hello to Elliott Isabella.

Because of the preeclampsia, she's about 11 days early. And at 5 lbs, 6 oz, she's a tiny one for sure. Catherine was induced at about 6:00 Friday evening, and Ellie wasn't born until 6:28 this morning--more than 32 hours later. Needless to say, it's been a long weekend for all of us.

It was worth it.

Back at it today, although only for a (very,) very brief jog of just over two miles in the XC flats. After seven days of no running and six days of nothing at all, my knee does not feel nearly as awesome as I hoped. Other than that I felt great. We'll see where I go from here.

Baby is great. If I weren't posting this so late I'd throw in a picture or two.

Short PM jog on the bike paths. I took a detour on a little dirt path through the park near our house without thinking about the fact that it was dark and I had no headlamp and ended up having to slow down a lot to avoid breaking an ankle.

So. The quantity and quality of my blogging has gone downhill since Elliott came. That's to be expected. Unfortunately, I can say the same about my running. But I don't think that's as much about the baby as it is about other things. Or an other thing. Mostly my knee. After a week it hurts like it did right before I took time off. I may go see a doctor again, but I don't think a doctor will tell me anything new. It looks like I may have to get back on the bike and wait this injury out. It also means I may not be running Speedgoat. Again.

Anyways, today I had an awful run on an awesome route. Dry Canyon to Battle Creek, Battle Creek to Trail 51, Trail 51 to Dry Canyon. I had planned to go farther, but, as mentioned above, it was an awful run, so I decided not to.

As a side note, despite my relative inactivity, I seem to have lost weight this week. Which means my bad run could be at least partly the result of not eating enough.

Also, I think I'm in the worst shape I've been in in years.
