I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Longish run on the BST from Hidden Valley, up Anne's to some park/parking lot on top of the ridge, and then back through a slightly different route. There were a lot of deer on the trail this morning, but I'm sure one set of eyes I say near the top belonged to a cougar. He should have headed down the trail to ear the deer and leave me alone.

Nice and easy. Up La Caille Gully to Wasatch, then down through Dimple Dell to 1300 East and then home.

I wore tights today for the first time of the season. My knees appreciated it.

I was up late, so I had a shorter run today. Not really intervals, but I did pick up the pace a few times.

It's been a pretty mild fall, but this morning was freezing. Literally--according to my phone it was 32 degrees when I headed out. The temperature didn't bother me (although I should probably start wearing something other than shorts), but it did make me feel like I needed to pee for the entire run. Nice.

Mid-week long run. Down to highland, than up and over Wasatch Blvd. back to Little Cottonwood Canyon, then down the hill and home. It's a good route, but I wish we had even one option for a flat run in the neighborhood.

Also, I'm 90% sure I'm going to register for the Squaw Peak 50 today. If I do, I might even run it this time. (Last time I registered, my first daughter was born on race day. It was convenient, because I wasn't ready to run 50 miles.)

Easy, uneventful morning run. I thought I was going to be running in the rain, but I got lucky and it stopped before I hit the road. Highland to Crestwood Park via Creek, then up past the high school (Brighton?) and home by way of Willow Creek Country Club and Alta Canyon.
