I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

I guess it's about time for me to check in for a moment. we arrived in LA at about six in the morning on Saturday and finally got some sleep in the afternoon, but not enough to feel ready for a run. The next day we headed up to Mammoth, so on Monday I skied rather than ran. Today I stayed in the condo with Catherine and Elliott, and in the evening Catherine and I headed down to the local high school track with my sister. It want much of a track, but it was good enough, and I fit in a quick three miles. I felt very out of shape, though, thanks to the altitude.

Two days of running in a row--I'm on a roll.

We were still in Mammoth this morning, so I skied for a few hours before we headed back to LA. I decided to get a short tun in tonight, so I headed down to the high school for an easy three miles on the track. An extra half mile would have put my shoes to 100 miles, but that seems like a poor reason to alter a run. Plus, the lights shut off halfway through my run and I didn't want to run in the dark longer than necessary.

Catherine and I went down to the Rose Bowl for a short run together this morning. Southern California feels very nice at this time of the year. Catherine tells me Elliott wants to grow up here.

Catherine and i went back to the Rose Bowl this morning. I ran am extended lap up through the neighborhoods, which only added a quartet mile, them I headed back along the route to meet up with Catherine and Elliott and finish the run with them.

In the evening I went out for a short run to get a little mileage in the hills around my parents' house. The loop was short, but I feel like I ought to do more doubles if I can't do longer runs. Anything to pad the mileage.

My sister and I went out for the annual Sacred Heart run this morning. It's a nice little 6.7 mile road loop with a good climb past Sacred Heart Academy (hence the name) in the middle, and we have (or at least one of us has) run it on the day before Christmas for at least the last 7 or 8 years. It's a nice little tradition.
