I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

I finally made it past four miles on the treadmill today. That's the good news.

The bad news actually started on Saturday abot half way through my run, when I started to feel a familiar twinge on the outside of my right knee. It went away within a mile, but it was enough to worry me.

My knee hurt again right from the start of tonight's run. It mostly went away as I warmed up, but I could still feel that something was there. Like on Satrday, it was enough to worry me.

If there is something happening to my knee, I don't know what to do. I've been consistently running 30 miles per week for the last few months with nothing longer than 10 miles. If my knee can't handle that, it probably can't handle running at all.

There's something about finals week that just makes it harder to find time to run. Expect more symbolic rns this week. And the worst thing is that I don't think I'm doing that good at these tests. I'm definitely better at law school. I guess it's a good thing that a law firm hired me.

Another two miles at the gym. The Avengers was on in the cardio cinema. That's a good treadmill movie.

One more short day, even shorter than the last. But finals end tomorrow.

That's right--nothing. But I took my final final this morning, and now the semester is over. After the test we piled Elliott into the car and headed to St. George. Tomorrow we'll drive the rest of the way to LA.

By the time we got here it was late and cold and my stuff was buried at the bottom of the car and I didn't want to dig it out, so I just skipped the run. I'm okay with that. Tomorrow we'll be in LA, and I can run at the Rose Bowl. That will be nice.

Two blanks in a row. But we were in the car all day, and by the time we settled down it seemed like more trouble than it was worth to go for a run. This has been one of my worst weeks in a while for running, but it was an exceptional week, so I'm okay with that. I hope to log a bit of vertical on Monday and Tuesday, so that should make up for it.
