I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Last week was a bit of a bummer as far as my running goes. I'm trying to do better this week.

Just under 45 minutes on the treadmill. One mile at 9:00, one at 14:00 on the 15 percent, one at 9:00, and one more on the 15 percent. I ran the first quarter of the last mile at 12:00, the second at 15:00, and finished it off with a half mile at 12:00.

Five miles on the treadmill, alternating the pace between 6:00 and 9:00, although most (four miles) was between 6:40 and 7:30. It felt okay.

Five more miles on the treadmill, this time pretty steady at 8:00 for the first four, with two half miles at 6:00. The last mile was a cool down at 9:00. I was bored by the end, and I would have run faster, but my leg still hurts enough for me to be cautious.

I did the hill routine on the treadmill again. It's a pretty good workout in 30 minutes.

Three miles on the mega-incline treadmill at the Orem gym. Those things are fantastic.

Anyway, I warmed up with a flat mile at 8:00, then I cranked it up to 30 percent and hiked at 20:00 for ten minutes, then I lowered it down to 25 percent and alternated between one mile running and one mile hiking (same pace) for the next eight minutes, then I cranked it back up to 30 percent for another two minutes. According to the display, it was a bit more than 1400 feet of climibing in one mile over twenty minutes. Not too bad.

I finished with another 8:00 mile on the flat.

Catherine, Elliott and I headed up to Salt Lake this morning for a run at Liberty Park with Catherine's brother Josh. We ran five laps on the paved route for a total of 7 miles in just over one hour. Pace was leisurely, at just over 9:00. I had a good time, and I think everyone else did, too. Afterward we stopped by Banbury Cross for donuts, the breakfast of champions.

In the evening I went to the gym for some more miles on the mega treadmill. One mile on each end of a mile on the 21-25 percent grade.
