I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Catherine went out for a long run with RAD in the snow this morning. I'm not as tough, so I stayed in the gym. It was surprisingly crowded--surprisingly to me, at least. I had no idea that Christmas Eve was such a busy day at the gym.

Anyway, the low mileage doesn't tell the whole story. After having my butt kicked by two days of skiing, I decided I'd better spend more time working my quads on the incline. So that's what I was up to.

By the time I got to run, it was cold and icy and treacherous, so I kept it to a one-mile token run.

Elliott had a great present. People gave  her age-appropriate gifts :) I wish I had been so lucky as a child.

I guess I've been slacking on my blog, but in my defense there hasn't been much to report. I've just been spending about a half hour each day at the gym, sometimes running fast, sometimes running hills, and sometimes just plodding along. On Monday I start training in earnest for the Ogden marathon, so I guess that's when I should start taking both my running and my blog more seriously.

I pretty much blew this week off--I'm not going to pretend it's anything other than what it was. Elliott was sick all day, and by the time I got a chance to run tonight I just didn't care. So when the side stitches hit me on the treadmill, it was easily enough to overcome what willpower I had left.

I've said it before, the real work starts next week.
