I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Back at home and I already miss the weather in Saint George. Even though it's cold here, I bundled up and ran outside. I'd generally prefer to be cold than to be on a treadmill.

I ran the same run at the same time in the same weather this morning. There's really not much else to say, although I did feel a bit better than I did yesterday morning. Which is not to say I felt great. Since last week I've been lacking that spring in my step that I thought was returning. It's been long enough that I don't think I can blame Lake Mountain any more, but then again, maybe I underestimated just how far my legs have degenerated. More likely is that I'm feeling the effects of  poor diet. I've tried to improve what I eat over the past couple of days, but there are two things to consider: 1) there's still a ton of candy around here and I can't stop eating it; 2) any changes in my diet will take some time to yield results. I can't just eat oatmeal today and expect to feel better tomorrow.

Same loop, third time in a row, but this time in reverse. The full moon was beautiful.

I don't know if it's the cold weather or just the semester catching up with me, but it's getting harder and harder to get out of bed and run in the mornings. I almost took a pass this morning, with plans to run in the evening, but I convinced myself that I lose less time running first thing.

Also, it just feels better to start the day with a run.

I waited till the last minute to decide, but I registered for the Ogden Marathon last night. We'll see if having a goal helps me train better. I put 2:50 as my expected finish time. I have no idea how that fits with reality. Also, it looks like I'll be pacing the 1:35 group at the St. George Half Marathon in a couple of months. Catherine is pacing the 1:55 group, so it should be a fun weekend.

It's been a while since I've gotten out for any sort of a long run. Great weather for it today.
