I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

I've gotten into a bit of a pattern that makes it hard to get up and run early. I'm doing what I can to stay on top of my running, even if that means late nights. So I was at the Cardio Cinema again tonight. They were showing the Office (season 2), and I had forgotten how funny that show used to be. I was enjoying it so much that I decided to run farther than planned. But the employee who was there shut down the projector 20 minutes before the gym closed, even though there were four of us running in there. Super lame. So I ended up just stopping and going home, even if it was a shorter run than planned

Late night run at the gym. It went as well as you can expect a run to go when you're trying to squeeze it in before midnight and you'd really rather be in bed.

I ran at the gym again today, even though it was at 4:45. I guess it's that time of year when the treadmill is the default. I'm glad those new treadmills at the Orem gym are so awesome. I know I've said that before, but seriously, those things rock. I don't understand why most people are still using the old ones.

The thing about running at the gym in the morning is that it's harder to get motivated to get out of bed early. That's why I slept in a bit longer than planned this morning, although not enough that I had to cut my run short. The good news is that I think I've broken out of the late-night-run cycle. Life is better  that way.

I decided to run outside this morning. It was gray and wintery, but not as cold as it looked.

Second day in a row of running outside. It's wet and sloppy, but it's not cold, so I may as well take advantage. I headed out on the River Trail toward the lake but not all the way to the lack.

The big news for me is that I've got a spot in the Ogden Marathon. I guess there were enough people in the first round of the lottery who changed their minds, so good for me. Now I've got till the 29th to decide if I want in.
