I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

The weather made a shift for the better over the weekend. That's good, because I'm not quite ready to move all my running indoors yet.

This morning I ran one of my usual loops, but I don't think I've ever given it a name. And I don't think I will now, either.

Today's run was pretty much the exact same as yesterday's--same time of day, same route, same weather, same sweaty shorts (okay, not that last one). I guess I wore different shoes, too.

I'm still worried about my knee, but based on experience more than anything. I do seem to fell better when I run outside, though. I think the variations in stride help my knee, and you just can't get those on a treadmill. Of course, now that it's getting so cold I'm going to have to start worrying about protecting my knees from the cold.

Last night was looking to be a late night, but I decided to go to bed and have an early morning, instead. Unfortunately, I was too busy with homework to go for a run. So tonight I went up to the gym instead. (I didn't want to run outside because I thought it would be weird while everyone was out trick or treating.)

Running in the evening really isn't my thing, so I kept it short and easy. Four miles, no surprises.

Last night was a late one, but I don't want to get out of my morning habit, so I was up early today. My MR10s are starting to show signs of their mortality--the rubber on one foot has worn through and I'm starting to run on EVA. I think I may retire them now.

One of my classmates received an email confirming his spot in the Ogden Marathon. As of now, I haven't received one, so I'll make the preliminary assumption that I'm out. That's preliminarily lame.

I was feeling pretty good this morning. I think my average pace ended up being a little under 6:45, which is a bit faster than I normally run every day. Probably because I let up a bit on Wednesday and Thursday.

I'm not sure what to think about the Ogden Marathon. I went to the website to see if there was a list of names selected in the lottery, but all I found was a notice that accepted and rejected runners will receive an email on November 1. It's now November 2, but I haven't received an email saying one way or the other.

I overslept this morning, and when I woke up it was too late for a long run. I decided to put off my run, thinking I would do a long run in teh evening. But by the time I had a chance to run, it was almost 11:00. Because my running motivation and energy are pretty low at that time, I decided to just do a symbolic three-mile run. This week is a bit of a step back, but as long as it's only one week that's okay. I'll blame my non-entry in the Ogden Marathon.

I also decided to retire the original MR10s. I figured it was time to let them go, so I pulled my second new pair out of the box. Once the two pairs I'm using now are gone, I'll never have another. I can't believe New Balance discontinued such a great shoe.
