I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

I'm in the middle of yet another attempt to get my running back on track. Right matters is the day-to-day consistency. Once I get that, I can worry about distance and speed. Until then, what's the point?

Anyway, I was tired this morning, so I ran a quick out and back on the River Trail to Independence Avenue.

Provo River Trail loop to Independence Ave. I passed some homeless-looking guys who were out fishing on the river. One of them was wearing combat clothes and pushing a funky tricycle. I wondered if he was going to shoot me or stab me or something. He didn't.

I overslept (by only a little) again. I can't seem to figure out snooze on my phone, so I guess I'll need to start setting a second alarm 15 minutes later.

Instead of taking the River Trail, I decided to go the opposite direction this morning and run a lap up around the Provo Temple. It turned out to be shorter than I thought--just over four miles where I was expecting closer to five--but it was still a good route. The good news is that it turns out we're probably about two miles from Rock Canyon, which means trails are withing easy running distance once again.

Same route I ran on Wednesday. Not much else to say about it.

Jun had mentioned an early morning run up Timp, but I didn't hear anything else about it after that. I woke up this morning to one of the most important thunder storms I've ever been in. My first thought was that I was glad not to be up on Timp. My second thought was to hope that Jun et al weren't up there. They were, and the reports only reinforce my gladness not to be there with them.

Once things dried out I went for a boring out and back on the River Trail. It was nice, warm, and dry.
