I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

After the reception following Elliott's blessing, my brother sent me a text asking if I wanted to join him for a mountain bike ride. Since it had rained so much last night and the trails were sure to be tacky, I couldn't say no. We rode up Hog Hollow, down rush, back up some other trail to Ghost Falls, then back down the Ghost Falls trail to BST and up Clark's. Unfortunately, it was about there that we ran out of daylight. Needless to say, our descent through Hog Hollow was significantly slower than usual. Still a good ride.

It was one of those days. And on Catherine's birthday, too. I seriously considered skipping my run. But then I thought better of it and went out at 11:00 to run my three-mile loop.

Busy day today. By the time I got out for my little three-mile run, it was already past midnight. Which means technically I did today's run tomorrow. Or something. Talk about time-travelling awesomeness.

I extended my short nightly run just a little today and headed up around the temple. I'd say it felt nice, but it didn't. I was still running at about midnight, and I think the lack of sleep (and possibly the lack of food, because I think I might not be eating enough) were finally catching up to me.

I went out for a road ride this evening. Just my usual out-and-back up Suncrest. The headwinds were ridiculous on the way out. It took me 23 minutes to climb Suncrest, which is longer than I can ever remember it taking. At least on fresh legs.

The thing about headwinds as that they usually make the return trip a lot more fun. That was mostly true tonight, but not on the descent. There's something about being blown around by constantly changing winds while riding at 40-50 mph that's more stressful than enjoyable.

Another three miles tonight. I was going to run four, but then I didn't feel like it. Or rather, I decided I'd be better off with dinner and sleep. Man, I feel like a bum these days.

I got out reasonably early this morning (reasonably early for me, all things considered) and rode the Alpine Loop, with a quick detour up to Tibble Fork Reservoir. I think the last time I rode the loop was in the 2009 Tour of Utah, so yeah, it's been a while. Great ride, though. I should do it more often.

I felt like I was cruising nicely up the Sundance side of the climb, but I hit the top in 50 minutes flat. It's not awful, but it's not exactly burning up the road, either.

(In case any one was planning on calling me on the mileage discrepancy, I forgot to switch my Garmin to cycling mode for the first mile.
