I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Today was my first day of classes. I had heard repeatedly that the first year of law school is the worst and that things settle down afterward. What a load of crap--this is going to be a very busy semester.

On my mission, I woke up early to do pushups and situps every single morning for two years, excepting only Sundays and a couple of sick days. The point wasn't so much to keep me in shape as it was to keep me in the habit of exercising. The plan worked, and i didn't miss a beat once I got home and had access to a gym again. I think I may have to treat my workouts the same way this year and just do enough to maintain my habits. In that spirit, I went out for a quick three miles in the evening.

I didn't have class today, and I'm not starting my externship until Thursday, so I snuck out in the morning for another ride in Corner Canyon. I broke my routine a little, and instead of riding down Ghost Falls I went down Rush, which reminded me what a crappy bike handler I am. Not that it's too scary or technical or anything--I just can't rail those tight berms well enough to maintain any kind of rhythm.

On the climb back up, I started a halfhearted time trial effort on Clark's but I abandoned it about halfway because I felt slow and had no motivation to push through the pain. Even after finishing slowly, I was about a minute faster than the first time I timed myself, so I guess there's that.

I wish I had more time for mountain biking. Or the trails were closer. Or both.

I've been slacking for the past few days and haven't updated this blog. Rather than writing for each of the lost days, I'm just posting the mileage. Three days, three miles each. I'm settling into a routine or a rut, depending on how you view it. But I figure that if I let this be my baseline, I'll retain at least a small degree of fitness. Even more if I can work in some longer efforts here and there, although those will likely be on the bike. Who knows, this may be good for me. After gradually building my legs through consistent low mileage, when I return to high volume I may be able to do some cool things. Like not getting injured every other week.

Elliott ran her first 5K this morning.

It was a family affair, and Catherine has more details over on her blog. (I don't know what my placing was since I never bothered to check. But it wasn't really 99th, since there weren't 99 people racing.)

As for me, I had a good time running with my two favorite girls. This was the first time I've run with the jog stroller, and it was pretty tricky at first but I got the hang of it. Elliott was a great little passenger, and she even slept through the last half mile. Yeah, she was working that hard.

Anyway, Elliott's blessing is tomorrow and I've got a ton of homework. Today is looking to be very busy. Still, I'm hoping to get out for a short ride this evening. If I do, I'll update later. If I don't, this is it.

UPDATE: I did get out for a ride. Awesome.
