I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

Another ride up Suncrest and back, this time before school. I'm still slow, but not as slow. Maybe the wind was just favorable.

I decided to ride my bike to school this morning. It's a bit of a hassle, because I have to ride to the gym and shower, then ride to my sister's house to stash the bike, then walk to school to work. Things would be much easier if there were a safe place to leave my bike on campus.

In the afternoon (with a killer tailwind on State Street):

One-way commute today. Catherine was in Provo this afternoon and needed me home sooner than I could get there by bike, so I left my bike at my sister's house and got a ride home. Probably a good call--a bike ride this afternoon would have been a wet one.

I've decided that even as I let my knee recover, I need to run at least once a week so I don't forget how. Unfortunately, this weeks run wasn't much, as I was only able to sneak out for two miles at midnight. Better than nothing, right?

I got up for an early morning ride up Suncrest. Under 20 minutes, bottom to top. It's not fast, but it is less slowlier.

We're at a family reunion this weekend, so there was no chance for a long run or anything. I thought I was going to get out for a ride in the morning, but Baby had a rough night (as seems to be the case most nights), so I wasn't able to get up on time to ride. Instead all I managed was an easy 30 minutes on the treadmill with Catherine and some weight lifting with my brother. And curling. Now that I've done it, I still can't it's considered a sport, let alone an Olympic sport. Stupid Canadians.
