I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

I made it out for another quick out and back up Grove Creek Canyon this evening. I brought a headlamp along, just in case, but I was able to finish the run before daylight ran out, although just barely. The trail was in great shape, even after the rain and snow earlier this week, but there was a lot of snow in the last quarter mile to the bench. Because I was the first to break trail, I finished the climb in 26:20, much slower than last time. I descended in 16:50, even slower, because of the snow at the top and the low light at the bottom.

What do you think, a couple more weeks of warm weather before we can head up by Big Baldy? There is probably still a lot of snow up there, huh?

I was thinking about that yesterday evening. I think we can run Big Baldy soon, although maybe not that soon. That said, I've already got a new idea for a longish run in that area that I'm sure we can run next weekend, as long as there are no surprise snow storms between now and then. We start where we did last time, and we head up Grove Creek. But instead of continuing through the meadow to Big Baldy, we drop down into Battle Creek Canyon, which takes us to Trail 51, which we take over through Dry Creek and on to the Little Baldy trail, which takes us back to the car.

Let me know if you're interested.

Oh, I'm interested. What do you think the mileage would be? Obviously, I need to be mindful of my taper and the fact that I'll have a race the following weekend.

I'm racing that weekend, too, but I'll be more worried about cramming than I will be about tapering :)

I think the mileage should be about the same as the Big Baldy loop, but with less vertical. Based on nothing but my best guess, which is usually wrong, I'd say we're looking at 15 miles and about 3,000 feet of climbing.

A week before a 50 miler, I'd call that perfect. Ha. As long as I can manage family conflicts, count me IN.

Nice.
