I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

I'm still realizing just how bad I messed up my left ankle last week. It's weird, because I knew I was being stupid at the time, but I  honestly didn't think I was hurting myself. I just thought I would be really, really sore for a day. Anyways, nearly a week later (I think, although I didn't actually bother to check my calendar from last week) and all the soreness is gone, except for the pain at the front of my lower left leg.

And even that has been feeling a lot better. Enough that I got up before 5:00 this morning for a quick out and back on the BST from Battle Creek to Dry Canyon. But about a mile and a half I could tell my leg was in bad shape. I second guessed myself twice before making the right choice and turning around to hobble back to my car. If it weren't for the shooting pain in my left leg, it would have been a nice run. As it is, I wound up with just over three miles in just under 30 minutes. And a sore leg. I was worried that I had set myself back a few days on the recovery, but within an hour or two I felt like I had before the run.

This evening I went to the gym for a hard hour on the stairs. I borrowed a workout from my cycling days and did a 5-20-20, which is nothing more than 5 minutes at threshold followed by two 20-minute intervals at threshold, with five minutes of recovery between them. I think I got the intensity about right, because by the end I felt like I could keep going but I was dying for it to be over.

Anyways, I think I'll cross train again tomorrow and then I'll test out my leg with a short run on Wednesday.

Hey...at least its not the knee...that's progress ;)!

I went through all sorts of various pains throughout just about every part of my lower body through the six month transition of changing my form. It seemed I would finish one pain only to start pain in a new area. And often enough it was because I pushed too hard too fast in some regard. Patience will pay off though.

How were the conditions up Battle Creek? I almost went up there last night, but I was worried about mud.

Man you can't catch a break with the injuries.

Aaron -- you're totally right. But I wish patience didn't suck so much.

Scott -- I didn't actually make it into Battle Creek, but conditions were great on the BST, although there were a few muddy spots from this weekend's storms. Jun and I were up the Canyon a couple of weeks ago, though, and the trail was in great shape at least up to the Trail 51 junction.
